5 Tips for Preventing Yellow Teeth
Virtually all of us have seen a toothpaste commercial before that tells us how our smile is the most important beauty feature that we have. That’s a big part of the reason why we tend to make sure to see the dentist once a year, schedule professional whitening appointments every few months and use the kind of toothpaste and mouthwash that has some kind of whitening ingredient in it.
But did you know that some of the best ways to prevent your teeth from turning yellow have every little to do with any kind of chemicals? If you’re looking for some recommendations on how to keep your own teeth pearly white in a natural kind of way, we have five of them for you below:
Watch how much coffee and wine that you consume. Although it’s pretty common to have a cup of coffee in the morning or wine with your dinner, the main challenge that comes with both of them is that they can easily stain the enamel of your teeth. So, if you tend to drink them on a fairly regular basis, keep a bottle of water nearby to rinse your mouth afterwards. Another helpful tip is to drink all colored beverages through a straw.
Eat “whitening” foods. Did you know that there are actually some foods that serve as “natural toothbrushes” in the sense that by eating them, their texture (and the vitamins and minerals within them) can actually help to make your teeth whiter? Some of them include apples, pears and celery so be sure to have some in your refrigerator; they are a healthy and effective teeth-whitening snack.
Try some baking soda. Although there are a lot of commercial whitening products on the market, one of the most powerful ones is something that you probably have in your pantry: baking soda. You can either sprinkle some of it onto your toothpaste directly or you can add a bit of water to it, place it on your teeth and it will serve as a paste. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, brush and then rinse. You will start to see brighter teeth after just one use.
Don’t smoke. If you’re still struggling with kicking the smoking habit, here’s another reason to quit: It turns the color of your teeth a darker hue. As a matter of fact, according to many dentists, even if you follow all of these other tips, it’s not going to matter much if you’re a heavy smoker. That’s definitely something to keep in mind.
Brush your teeth immediately after meals. If you were to ask a dental office like Debbie Lane Dental & Orthodontics for some suggestions on how to keep your teeth from turning yellow, one thing that they will probably recommend is that you brush your teeth immediately following your meals; especially if you happen to eat something like strawberries or blueberries. That’s because although they are good for you, their natural coloring can still stain your enamel. So if you’re headed out for a meal, get into the habit of keeping a portable toothbrush and toothpaste in your car or purse. It’s an easy way to help your teeth maintain their beautiful white color—no matter what you eat.
